This is how we tackle a Design Sprint

1. Understanding the problem

What are the user’s needs? What is the main problem? What are we going to focus on?

During the first day we will define the problem, the sprint goal and the metrics. Your entire team will have a broad understanding of the problem you are trying to solve.

2. Diverge & converge

How can we come up with as many solutions as possible to this problem? Which ideas are the best and where do we go from here?

We explore various scenarios and make sketches of the most promising solution.

3. Create prototypes

We make a high-fidelity interactive prototype. It can be a clickable model or an app interface.

4. Test with users

One of the biggest mistakes made is to think that what you love is also best for users. Unfortunately, it does not work that way. That is why we test everything we make. At the end of the Design Sprint we test the prototype with the target group, so you can see their primary reaction.

Tips for the ideal Design Sprint

In order to make design sprints a success, it is wise to consistently follow a number of established best practices. Take advantage of these tips and tricks:

  • Do not underestimate the intensity of the process. The days are long and there is a lot of information and work to be done. So take regular breaks and try not to continue working in the morning or in the evening on your own initiative.
  • Try to involve key stakeholders as early as possible in the concept and development process, ideally in the design sprint planning phase. You do this by placing them actively in the role of product owner.
  • Indicate clearly and already during the design sprint planning what you need from the customer.
  • Work in short iterations and with tight deadlines. This way you challenge people and get a lot done in a short time.
  • Provide a varied, but not too large, development team (4-6 people) in which the various sharing expertise can be found.

Create realistic expectations about the prototypes to be delivered. It is quite logical that within four or five days you will not have a product that is 100% perfect. But a solution that is eighty percent finished and based on input from users does provide the foundation you need to build on.
