Rails World 2023

Our Ruby on Rails developers, Gijs, Jeroen, Carsten, and Stefan, attended Rails World at the Beurs van Berlage in Amsterdam this year. The two-day conference, featuring technical talks, demos, workshops, networking, and keynotes about the latest features and best practices in Rails development, was a great success! There were over 700 Rails developers in attendance, 29 speakers, and it concluded with a big birthday party celebrating the 20th anniversary of Ruby on Rails.

Applications of Rails

Whether you want to set up an online store, create a platform for people to share information, or provide a place for customers to log in and access their data, Ruby on Rails can handle it all. It's flexible and adaptable to various needs. Rails is often used to build an MVP (Minimal Viable Product) for startups or companies looking to quickly test and validate an idea. Often, development continues on the Rails foundation, but sometimes a different solution is chosen to move forward. Some big names that have successfully used Rails include GitHub, Shopify, Airbnb, Kickstarter and Zendesk.

What do you remember about Rails World?

Gijs: "The diversity of speakers and topics was truly impressive." I was particularly impressed by the presentation on the latest developments in Rails. It shows how much potential is still in this framework." Carsten: "For me, networking with other professionals was the highlight. I learned so much by talking to colleagues from other companies and exchanging best practices."

Is the Rails community as strong as they say?

Gijs: "It was amazing to see how much passion there is for Rails in the community. Everyone was enthusiastic and willing to share knowledge. It really felt like a community." Stefan: "Exactly, I think it was confirmation that we at Sping are on the right track with our focus on Rails and developments within our Digital Lab."

What are your expectations of Rails as a framework?

Gijs: "Recently, The Rails Foundation was established, a non-profit organization with the goal of keeping Ruby on Rails independent from its creators. This gives confidence that Rails is there to innovate and remain relevant for the future." Jeroen: "Ruby on Rails continues to evolve and won't disappear in the next 20 years. By choosing this framework, you know that your application can always grow with your company. The benefits of Rails for developers lead to faster, more cost-effective, and more reliable product development. For Sping's clients, this translates to lower risks, faster market validation, and higher potential returns."
